Hi all,

I would like to update my gas fireplace surround and hearth by painting it (I'm not sure what colour etc yet). I am not sure exactly what it is made of, but it's a stone similar to what you find on a kitchen worktop.

What would be the best way to prepare and paint this? Any recommendations for primers etc?

We never actually use the fire, so technically it doesn't have to be heatproof, however for my own peace of mind I want to ensure that it is safe to do this in case someone else uses the fire in the future.

I do have a young daughter who may from time to time step on the hearth, so I need to ensure that anything I paint it with won't easily scratch or chip.

Thank you
