painting dirty walls

I have just re-emulsioned a non-smokers bedroom that was last done five years ago

the top section (luckily there is a picture rail) seemed dusty so I brushed and sponged it, but it has dried patchy where dust has mixed into the paint (I brushed this section and used a roller below the rail, which looks OK)

obviously I ought to have done a better job of cleaning it. I am going to recoat today. It was, and is, matt emulsion so not very easy to wash down

What recommendation for this kind of job?

Just use the roller then and don't smear it around.

It's made my day for JohnD to get something wrong.

It's only oily grime like tobacco tar that bleeds through so you should be OK to roller it without any problem.

i tend to use a brush attachment on my dust extractor, no risk of discolouring the paint and no airborne dust.

I tried to dust them with a soft brush but it didn't work very sell.
