Painting garden shed and bench

1. What's the best thing to use to treat a garden shed? I've tried water-based shed treatments before but have found they start to flake off after a few weeks, and a year later it looks terrible. They seem to be OK for rough timber but the shed is neither rough nor smooth (somewhere in the middle). I'm after something that will last a while and which can be used without going back to bare wood. Would a woodstain be better?

2. Same thing for a garden bench. It's pretty basic, so I just want something that will make it last.

Try Ronseal woodstain.

Mine is still in good nick since I appiled it 2 years ago, on this canopy.
