Mother-in-law has just had a room skimmed and asked me how long to leave it to dry before she can paint it(don't know why she didn't ask the plasterer when he was doing it)...any ideas guys?

Once all the plaster in the room has dried out, 4 or 5 days under normal conditions (not too much heat), then you can paint it no problem. Seal the wall/ceiling first with a mist coat of MATT emulsion (white), to the manufacturers instructions, then give it a full coat of Matt emulsion and then put on the emulsion of your choice, but always start off painting new plaster with MATT.

Roughcaster.

As soon as the plaster goes pink and is dry it can be painted . you dont have to wait months like the old days. The new plaster can be painted with a mist coat first, a thinned down coat of emulsion. then firther coats can be applied to amke it more solid.
