i have several metal window frames to paint white. will either use metal primer where needed, undercoat, gloss; or smoothrite. haven't decided yet, mainly because the window frames are of varying age and condition.

however, my actual question is should i prime new putty first with anything special? i'm just trying to prolong the paint from cracking etc.

Give it a few days to a few weeks (depending on weather & temperature) to harden/skin-over then treat it as you would the rest of the frame(s) ie. undercoat/gloss or 2x smoothrite

As LJW says. If you paint too soon the putty will still be oozing oil and this will wrinlke the paint. Be aware that the birds love it and may peck at it to get the oil out.
