Painting newly plastered walls

Can anyone help? We have just built a new house and the walls have been plastered well over six months with the heating on in the house over the last few months about 4 hours a day. We started to paint with good quality emulsion which took fine to the walls in the kitchen and utility. However when we started painting in the bedrooms the paint seemed to skim over areas despite our best efforts. We have since PVA'd the rest of the walls in one bedroom and tried again but to no effect. No one can tell us why this is happening. Someone suggested perhaps sizing the walls first but the fact that its not happening consistently throughout the house is a mystery? I have pics of this if anyone wishes to see them.

Sounds like the plasterer has over polished the walls .

sounds right. sometimes the plasterer can polish the surface a bit to smooth making the emulsion skid on the surface when applied. This can bring "fat" to the surface of the fininished wall and stopping the paint adhering properly.

o dear...

This might have caused you even more problems...Id suggest you really rub the PVA walls down well with 100 grade abrasive paper (aluminium oxide)

And dont PVA any more rooms..its an old wifes/builders/diyers tale and doesnt work

Thanks for all your helpful replies. We used MacIntyre paint (the Irish brand of Crown). We watered it down slightly before applying. Did exactly what it said on the tin so to say! This paint was specifically for newly plastered walls. As said before - it went on great to the kitchen and utility but you can even notice a colour difference in the plaster finish between these rooms and the bedrooms which are more pink than grey. We only PVA'd one room so we need to start sanding this back. Would anyone recommend sizing the walls or will sanding them be enough? Is this the sign of an inexperienced plasterer? Jeni

Don't size the walls either.

You will need explain in EXACT detail how each room was emulsioned.

What EXACT emulsion was used.

What EXACT instructions are on the paint.

Does the Kitchen have alot of steam ?

Does the Utility room have alot of steam ?

What surfaces were plastered over, i.e. gyproc or brick etc ?

What EXACT plaster was used.

Did the Plasterer use PVA, is so what kind ?

Where did he get his water supply for mixing plaster ?
