Painting over a roof - how to set-up ladder?

The front of my house has a garage with the second floor above the garage. The garage stick out about 12 feet from where the second floor starts so there is a roof over the garage. I need to paint the house above the garage but am unsure how I can reach this part. I have thought of nailing a board into the roof of the garage and putting the feet of the ladder against this but I don't like the idea of nailing through the roof. Does any one have any ideas on how best to reach the side of the house above the garage?

Don't know whether it is any help to you, but we thought it cheaper than scaffolding. Especially the type you can tow behind your car.

I would think you would reduce the hire time by using acrylic primer/undercoat.
