Hi I am looking to paint my banister handrail in a natural wood effect colour with the rest of the banister in white gloss. The whole thing is currently all glossed. I guess the best way to do this would be to strip the handrail back to the wood but I dont have that kind of patience!! What's the easiest way of doing this that would give the best effect?

Firstly you will never be able to achieve this on a painted surface, some will use what is often termed as paint graining. This is where the paintwork is abraded and a baseoat applied, when cured you can apply another coat and by useing what is called a graining tool you can achieve a grained effect.

Shades of Ochre will provide you with the best colour choice, this can then be coated with a clear varnish to protect your work.
