I've just bought my first house, stripped the walls and the plaster seems in pretty good shape, it been done in the last ten years (or so im told), there are a few hairline cracks, however i want to paint directly onto them, do i need to treat them first? prima them? get the skimmed? also, can i just smooth the bumps out with sandpaper? Thanks, Mark

If the plaster is in good shape, you can fill the hairline cracks with flexible filler. As for the bumps, yes you can sand them but make sure the plaster is sound behind the bumps. If you tap it and it sounds hollow then it's lost adhesion and you might have to chip back and fill with plaster repair. Another option if there are a lot of cracks is to fill them and then cover with lining paper. That will give a nice finish for you to paint.

Trotter try covering walls with Unibond PVA if they are all ok which will give them an extra seal, then the lining paper really gives good results.
