Whats the best way to rub/clean down varnished spindles ready to paint over with white gloss. Some of the varnish is peeling off in certain places.

Thx for quick reply, but what is webrax?
Its the green stuff on the back of the kitchen sponge- you can get different grades.
I recommended it because it will mold to the shape of the spindles

Thx for that 
steel wool! perfect for it. clean them off with turps after
apply white primer
light sand with p60 paper
undercoat with white undercoat
light sand.....
dust off
2nd coat of under coat to give it body
sand off
couple of coats of gloss =]
