Painting plasterboard after t&j

I see that there is a special plasterboard primer/sealer. Is this really necessary as it is very expensive. Will watered down good quality vinyl emulsion for the first few coats be adequate?

Get some trade emulsion (none vinyl) do a couple of mist coats like you would for new plaster and it'll be fine.
