I usually use a coat of undercoa then gloss. But I'm thinking could I use eggshell?

Sure, just give a sand down, then 2 coats of eggshell - no need for an undercoat. Undercaot can crack.

I'm thinking you could.

if your rad is quite old and yellowish, then it might be a good idea to undercoat first, otherwise paint with 2 good coats of quality eggshell (oilbase)
