Im getting round to painting my single glazed timber sashes when the weather picks up. I have given them a full overhaul and stripped back to bare wood.

What do you think about re-painting them - should I do it with the sashes in or out and why??

Cheers

Its a lot easier if you take them out.

I also take the opportunity to replace the sash cords and and the beading for a beading with a built in seal/draft excluder.

Thanks, yeah im re-cording them and fully draughtproofing them also. I was just thinking that is it a good idea to paint the part of the sash stile that is in contact with the parting bead? will the brish strip rub the paint off and get it clogged up?

Any experience gratefully received

I always take them out. But to be true, I always end up doing a restoration job at the same time.
I use http://www.mightonproducts.com/catalog/primed-parting-bead-with-brush-p-808.htm

Take the seal out, paint the parting & staff bead (but not in the groove).
Then put the seals back.

Paint the sashes to the edge.

As long as the paint dries thoroughly, never had a problem with the brush-seal 'clogging up'.
