Parents held liable for son's crime

They gave a gun to a 15 year old.
What a couple of halfwit imbecils.
They deserve every year given to them.
Leaving aside the fact that this was in the US...

Would you apply the same principle to letting 15 year olds have access to kitchen knives in the UK?
Or let a 15 year old be trusted to look after a (now hopefully registered) XL bully in the UK?

You can’t shoot people dead with a knife or a dog .

For one, the family purchased Ethan the handgun he used just days before the shooting as an early Christmas present and failed to properly secure the weapon, prosecutors allege. The parents also refused to take him home from school on the day of the shooting as school officials suggested, after finding Ethan's drawings of a gun and bloody figures.

Clearly, the parents neglect contributed to the boys mental health and it blows my mind every time to hear how easy it is to give a deadly weapon to a teenager who can't even buy alcohol at that age. Madness. The parents will be tried seperately and expected to be jailed for up to 15 years.

Here we go...
My kids could peel fruits at 6 years of age and, like everybody else apart from you, our knives were not locked away in a bomb proof safe.
Dogs were never left with kids alone, in fact, dogs didn't come in the house.
What you need to push into your brain is that the parents bought the kid a gun.
A gun cannot be used to peel fruits, its only reason to exist is to shoot and make a hole into something or someone.
Try to understand, you can do it.

Reminds me of the idiot parents of one of the two boy who died on a high powered electric bike fairly recently while allegedly being chased by the police. They bought their spoilt feral son that bike as an early birthday present so they must shoulder a lot of the blame.

An electric bike isn't really in the same argument, although a car can be used to attack innocent people on the pavement. Owning a gun is one thing but a choice is made to load, aim and fire the weapon in a series of decisions that have irretrievable consequences. The parents who gave their child the gun go to jail for 15 years - the parents of the victims mourn their loss for the rest of their lives.

Funnily enough in the UK despite not being able to buy a shotgun until the age of 18, a 15 year old can be lent or given a shotgun and used without supervision.

And in fact according to the government, “As with many other issues, we believe that this is one on which parents should decide the age at which their children should take part in shooting sports.”

Or perhaps, "gun owners held responsible for unsafe behaviour leading to death"
They were not prosecuted for fire arm safety offences. They were “found guilty of four counts of involuntary manslaughter”. That’s equivalent to gross negligence manslaughter in the U.K.

So no, they are being held accountable for their son’s crime due to their gross negligence which directly led to the murder of 4 people.
