Hi all

I am thinking of upgrading my indirect system to direct. Obviously I'll get a CORGI reg fitter to install, but is it within regulations to only get maybe the gas and water feed to the boiler fitted and get the fitter to leave tails for me to connect too?

Have fiited all the radiators in our house so whilst I'm no expert I feel confident to undertake part of the installation myself.

Also are there any rules / regulations that would prevent me from having it fitted to the wall of my garage?

Any thoughts or ideas appreciated.

Thanks

Nic

errr, thanks for the input Dan :? . I am sorry but I searched the forum and couldnt find what I was looking for, perhaps I am using the wrong combination of words.

As my Nan used to say, "if you have nothing sensible to say, say nothing"

Thanks

Nic

Look a little harder - this is one of the questions that is asked almost weekly on various forums and is never answered fully because those hell-bent on DIYing will quote omissions in the regs and those who spend their time sorting out DIY abortions and spend a lot of time money and effort keeping up to date with everything argue the regs as is, including the spirit of the rules.

If in doubt phone CORGI and your local planning office as all boiler installations are notificaible.

And tell your granny to stop talking about stuff she knows nothing about. Why do people asking questions ALWAYS assume they are the first? And why do they get miffed when their lack of research and originality is pointed out to them?

I dunno, it's late, it's hot, I'm tired; off to bed - gotta sort out a solar system than has never been serviced. Another "I need my boiler serviced because its not worked for two weeks" call. Where do these idiots come from? :x

What do I know? I only do this for a living.

hmmm, friendy huh. Perhaps try post xxxx or link to something, it's a lot less effort than going off on one!

On most of the forums I'm a member of we try to be a little more constructive. and whilst I appreciate your time and effort for the second post a link to a thread that contains this info would have been great, even if it didn't provide all the answers.

Cheers

Nic

There is no regulation that says that the boiler cannot be located in a garage, as long as all of the flueing minimums are adhered to.

The installer cannot leave the tails for you to connect up to as they would not be able to fire, let alone commission the boiler. Usual practise would be to have 3-4 metres of copper connected on the heating flow and return.

Let's turn this on it's head, instead of installer doing his bit first why not do yours? You leave him some tails to connect to. Let him, the trained person on the ground (unlike us who can only advise on components you consider necessary to tell us) advise about boiler position fluing condensate drain electric power gas pipework.

For your part make sure you have independent time and temperature control TRV's except in zone where roomstat positioned, lagging of pipes outside heated zones, frost stat in garage, autobypass if required by manufacturer, job done in workmanlike mannor. So that he is able to notify that the installation complies with the building regs (adequate pipe supports, correct drilling/slotting of joists and walls, sleaving of gas pipe where appropriate sealing of same) . If it doesn't he cannot notify and you can't satisfy the buyers solicitor when you try to sell the house.

Cheers guys

Gives me something to work with. The flue for the boiler shouldnt be a problem but I think Ill get a local installer out to advise beforehand. The only other concern I have but I dont think its an issue is that I have used JG speedfit throughout the bungalow, except for visible area's where I have used chrome plated. I assume there is not likely to be any issues as the JG pipe is able to take the relevant pressure.

Thanks

Nic

If you want an RGI to do the minimum necessary then he has to

fit the mounting bracket to the wall
Assemble and fit the flue
connect the gas supply
commission the boiler
notify CORGI or the BC of the installation.

You would be best to get him to also advise on siting and sizing of the gas supply pipe so a visit before anything is started is obligatory.

We charge £180 for than and do it in two visits. Not many take up up on that though as there are many unregistered doing installations for just £200. Fine until they fail and until the property has to be sold.
