When a boiler/ heating system is powered from a socket, it has to be unswitched. With this power source, the plug HAS to be removed before any work is carried out on the system. I would suggest removing the plug is far safer than a spur that may be wired incorrectly. Anyhow I take no chances, I always check supply leads before I finger the internals on the boiler or controls. Not the for the first time have I come across a setup where the controls were powered by one source and boiler by another.
