Its gone into limp home mode, due to a fuelling / exhaust / turbocharger fault.
Presumably the management lamp is lit on the dash - this means that a fault code is stored in the cars computer, which can be read by any garage with the suitable diagnostic gear.
John :)

or it could be the maf.
you can buy ob11 leads very cheaply from ebay and down load the free vag com software to read basic faults for your car.

He as just rang me to say that he took it to his local garage, and it was the oil pump...Baffled on that one..???

Some diesels (Izuzu in particular) use engine oil pressure as a means to open the injectors but I don't think thats the case with yours.....presumably the oil pressure was too low to open any hydraulic valve lifters, or the engine was shut down for safety reasons?
John :)

I would guess its seen the low (but not absent) oil presure and gone into limp home mode in the hope of not eating the engine.

2.0L TDi or what?

They give a bit of engine oil pump trouble, otherwise he might have meant fuel pump?
