I have been informed most of the pipework on my system is made of the above material. I have an open vented system fuelled by a Baxi Solo 2 boiler just doing the rads. The water is heated by a very old main water heater. I have a small leak on a soldered fitting and am unsure if I need special soldered fittings or should I go for compression. I am also going to change to a combi system but am apprehensive of changing to a sealed system in case I get leaks. Any comments/ advice greatly appreciated. The original leak was due to the kids bashing the pipe with their toys.. Thank you

Passivated Zinc (ie galvanised) should be heated with care as at certain temperatures Cyanide gas can be released.

Perhaps your pipework is zinc plated steel tube? I believe this was widely used at the time of the copper shortage in the 1970s. Best to replace as much as you can access easily and connect to the old pipe with compression fittings.
