Hi guys,

Just looking for advice on how best to patch this up or repair ? Basically we’ve had a new boiler fitted. Originally there was a cupboard fitted around the previous boiler that seemed to cover this up and there’s also been some reconfiguration with regards to the pipes for the boiler.

Anyway, there’s a draft coming through this hole which is causing the traditional drafty door syndrome when the nearby internal door is fully closed over and I wondered the best way to cover up ? I was thinking expanding foam or cutting up a bit of cardboard to fit and tape up…. Really not too sure

Well, whatever you use will have to accommodate the expansion and contraction of the pipes as well as coping with the maximum water temperature. stuff fibreglass up into the cavity up there?

To seal it properly you could get a small piece of plasterboard. Cut it to the shape of the un-painted section of ceiling. Measure carefully the positions of the two pipes and drill corresponding holes in the plasterboard. Then cut the plasterboard lengthwise through the centres of the holes. Slot the back piece into position with a generous dollop of adhesive all over and press into position. Next do the same with the front piece but also butter the edge where they will meet, so they butt up closely to each other and fill any gap.
You can then paint it to match the rest of the ceiling and it shouldn't stand out too much but will stop the draught.

Plaster board, cut existing back directly behind pipes to wall , then insert one piece trimmed around the back of pipes and secure with screws to the timber against the wall just above.

see pic, remove red section.
