patio railings

Hi,

I'm laying a patio and need to have a railing put up because there is quite a drop down to the ground.

I don't want a wall because it will obstruct the view into the garden, I don't want metal railings either.

I have seen timber balustrades with metal inserts that look nice. The builder is building our retaining walls and I'm wondering if the timber posts should be built in as part of the wall or can be fitted later
