I had someone round to look at laying a new patio for me, he seemed genuine enough but said he would need to lift the old patio, lay a concrete base and then lay the new patio with a wet mix.

I could be wrong but does this sound a little over the top or about right?

Lastly can anyone recommend a good website where I can buy paving slabs?

hes right to say he needs to lift the old patio, but he should only need to lay mot type 1 stone chippings down and compact those to give a decent sub-base. theres no need to lay a concreet sub-base (assuming its a normal patio and not a driveway etc) which will be a lot cheaper.

a good website to view them is www.stonemarket.co.uk
www.bradstone.co.uk
www.marshalls.co.uk

none will sell them direct to you though, you will have to go through a local stockist unless you go for the tat in wickes etc

no its not a driveway I did wonder why he said he would lay a bed of concrete. thanks for the sites but do you have any which will sell direct?
