I am a plasterer/bricklayer, and do loads else, i charge £ 160 a day for my own work, £ 120 - 140 for subby work and wonder what i would get on the books?

I'm a "multi-trade plumber" (read "plumber that gets sent to do any job under the sun").

I travel all over the SE and London and subby. I average about £240 a day, but my expenses bring this figure all the way down to somewhere around £200 pretax.

Some times it's mega quiet and I'll be done by lunch time having earnt £60, some days I'm on site at 7am and won't finish till 3am the next day, and on days like that (if it's a weekend) I can bring home the bacon (I grossed £624 last saturday).

But then I don't get any sick / holiday / pension and I pay to run my van / diesel / accomodation / tools etc.

Saying that I don't think I'd like to be on the books, I like the gamble of not knowing what I'll earn today! ;)

I would guess at £80 max - probably get steady work for ROK - or not as they went bust ;) But doing bricky / spread etc. for similar company on Social Housing repairs  Employed as a plumber on Housing Association kept me going from 1980 - 87 with a 15% mortgage  Back in the days of Direct Labour . Got out just before Maggie sacked the lot and said it was cheaper to employ subbies . I`ve got 7 years of pension waiting for me @ 60 - that`ll send us on a world cruise

3rd year apprentice, £18,500 salary
As a 3rd year app. way back I was doing Private Jobs @ weekends for £1.00 an hour - that bought 4 pints on Sat. night - how are you doing Pro Rata - can you afford to buy the = of 16 pints for a Sat. mornings work . . But then you haven`t got Gas Board privatisation to look forward to - and money for nothing shares ;) - and when you retire you`ll have paid taxes to keep all us baby boomers in pensions - no one to keep you . Better rig up the gas supply now  Good Luck , you`re gonna need it .

Don't know wether I'm just having a dumb moment, but I can't seem to get my head around that message.

How am I doing being paid annually? I'm doing ok.

Lets say £2.60 a pint, X 16 = £41.60, Yeah I think I may just scrape that for a mornings work.

 Sorry I don't really understand any of that.

No offence taken M8 ;) . Interested to see how things are financially for a "nearly finished" apprentice in 2011 . Seemed like a good idea to work it back in time to pints of beer ;) . I spent 10 years from 1970 - 1980 getting through a lot of beer  . . Gas Board Privatisation was the biggest sell of of state owned - ie. taxpayer owned -assets by any tory government - it released £ billions and every tom dick and harry was an overnight shares owner - ( exept me , I`m a true socialist and never bought any ;) ) . So that`s all gone and the cushy jobs at the old Gas Boards are history - it`s all hard graft with some poxy line manager on your back at British Gas now - apparently . So that`s not an easy career option . As to you paying for us old farts when we draw our state pensions - that`s how the system works , those working pay for the retired - via tax . Problem is there are many more of us than there are of you . Basically it`s going to be a LOT harder for you during your working life than it was for any of us born in the `50s. . Rig up the gas supply in your house and a new heating system - while the gas lasts - It may run out worldwide by the time you retire .
