Why does PayPal have to take funds from my balance first? I want to pay for something *not* using my balance but all on a card.

"Er", because PayPal only refunds up to a certain amount if things go wrong, whereas BarclayCard do the whole lot. I have experience in this.

Is there any way round this?

According to this PayPal help page I was wrong.

However, I can imagine that it might not work if you already have an account.
