The spec. of the machine would be useful to know.

Have you performed a disk cleanup?

(START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup)

It will scan for a bit and then display a dialog.

Tick all the boxes with the exception of "Office Installations files", if present and "Compress old files" and then click ok. It might take a while.

Also, defragmenting the hard disk might be required.

(START>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter)?

Click Analyse and let it scan. If it says to defragment, click the Defragment button. It will take a while.

You don't mention what anti-virus & Spyware packages you have installed. Are they in place & up to date?

It sounds like something is working in the background..

ctrl/alt/del will bring up the task manager.

go into performance and see what percentage of cpu usage you hav. if its more than 5-10% at idle, then something is probably running.

Go to processes, and see if any process (other than system idle) is running (it will show as a percentage under 'cpu') at more than a couple of percent. If there is one, highlight it and 'end process'

then see if the pc runs any better.

some of the processes are self explanatory...some are not. If you can't work out which '.exe' file it is, post it here.
