 after using everything from dishsoap to degreaser i had a brainstorm while reaching for the paint thinner(joke) BABY OIL!! after applying it twice and washing my daughters hair with shampoo it was all but gone...try it

As the mother of 9, we have dealt with headlice, all the possible solutions, vaseline & dawn. The best way I have find to deal with head lice is not to wait until you have them but to be on guard for them. Kwell and a lot of those lice shampoos are harmful and lice are now becoming immune to them, and the vaseline, baby oil are just tooo hard to get out of a child's hair. Although Dawn does work really well, you do have to wash the hair more than once and you have to let the dawn sit in the hair to get the oils out.

What I now do is once a week, I wash my kids hair with our normal shampoo, then I apply an ample amount of conditioner to the hair, brush and comb the hair with the child's hairbrush, then I use a lice comb that I have picked up from the pharmacy - don't use the old kind they have a new one with long tines that is really great for girls with long hair - then I comb through - this gets the live lice, the nits and since I do it once a week, I know before the school does if my kids have lice. If you do find lice, just do this routine daily for a week or until your comb is clean for three days in a row. The other thing that helps is if you keep having an outbreak of headlice at your house or school is to keep your child's hair up and use hairspray and gels, these items plaster the hair in place and make it harder for the head lice to grip.

My oldest daughter now has 2 school aged children of her own, and she does this with them and has only had one case of headlice.

I need to get baby oil out and I am wondering if lemon juice or beer or something like that would work.

In reading these posts, for those of you trying to get lice out of hair...use 100% mayonnaise (not miracle whip) and put on thick each night, use a shower cap to cover if you want...and keep on for 10 min or so, and you will soon be free of the lice.

THIS WORKS!! I tried the last suggestion. IT WORKS!! Saturating the hair with baby oil and squeeze it out and then wash the hair with Dawn or Palmolive does the trick. 2-3 washes with the dish soap is more than enough. Make sure you keep the soap out of the babies eyes of course.

:D Thank Heavens for finding this forum on getting vaseline out of hair! My very curious 2 1/2 year old twins just got done "painting" each other with none other than vaseline. It was at least an inch thick from head to toe. I tried everything to get it out of their hair and nothing worked. Then I read the suggestion with the baby oil and dishwashing detergent - I threw them into the tub - and viola! It worked! Now I have twins with the softest hair in town!! Thanks for the suggestion!

I was working as a croupier in a casino in Africa and we had a staff party themed punks and rockers. I decided to spike my hair and foolishly decided to use vaseline. Next day trying to get ready for work I couldnt get the stuff out. In a fit of madness I put white spirit on my head. Never ever again.

My five year old had head lice, and the local health department suggested I saturate her hair with vaseline and let it soak under a shower cap for eight hours! I did this and it did kill the live lice, but the nits are still there as is the vaseline. It's been almost a week now, I'm still picking out nits, and the vaseline is awful. I don't recommend this solution to anyone. I tried detergent, dish detergent, shampoo, and liquid detergent, nothing works. I read on here to try vinegar, so that will be my next step. I'll let you know if it works. Also, how come clean children get lice? I had no clue she had it and I wash and comb her hair everday!
Hi, I am going through the same thing now with my 5 year old. I cannot for the life of me get the vaseline out of her hair, and it is making it harder to see and remove the nits. I have read that soaking the hair in baby oil and then washing will help, but that seems counter-intuitive. Did you happen to try this?

Hi, just wanted to double check with you re the baby oil. It does not seem logical to me that baby oil would break down vaseline on the hair; I just wanted to double check with you! But I am about ready to try anything. We have washed my daughter's hair numerous times now, including using Dawn dish wash liquid, and her hair is still very greasy. Thanks.

that was wetdawg's only reply so i doubt if you will get a direct responce.

but as you said I am about ready to try anything what have you to loose?

perhaps YOU could come back and say it really does work

One product you could use is DAX Shampoo, it's a veg based shampoo made to remove Oily and Petroleum based hair products.

Can be found in most ethnic hair care shops, have used it myself and now use it as my reg shampoo.

I came here reading about ways to remove vaseline from my 2 year old twins hair and I am shocked at some of what I read. Although I am a hairdresser, I never had to deal with vaseline in the hair but lice- I can give you the skinny on.

LICE- called Pediculus Humanus, is none other than a mite. There are three types of lice that inhabit humans. 1. Head lice- they like the dense hair covering and warm of the scalp. 2. Body lice- these critters feed freely on the skin and can be anywhere on the body. 3. Pubic lice- no need to explain them other than they are commonly slanged "crabs" due to their appearence under a microscope.

FACT: all lice can and will jump up to 25 feet. Thus the reason why when a person infested with them is kindly and quickly asked to leave a salon. They can live for weeks without feeding and their main purpose in life is to eat and breed. Knowing this moms, when your child comes home with lice take caution and toss all plush stuffed animals in a trash bag and put it somewhere cold like the garage or basement for a good month to kill off any lice that might have travelled and their eggs. Eggs are called nits. the lice look for a place such as a hair strand to attach their eggs to. They are terribly difficult to remove as they take on a similar texture like dried up Krazy Glue. Those metal nit combs sold at pharmacies are really the right and only real good way to get them out with the help of something greasy to break down the sack. Lice are not a dirty thing, just prefer to go to kids due to the warmth that children give off from being so active.

Now that I got everyone's skin to crawl, there is the information I was taught in beauty school. As for the vaseline I did try an old hairdressers trick to remove built up hairspray, styling products, and pretty much anything other than removing vaseline (LOL). I poured some shampoo in my hand and mixed in some baking soda (never mix the baking soda in the bottle of shampoo, it will explode) wash your hair with it and use a fine comb while it is in to remove the real sticky stuff. It's a great formula for washing out build up that looks like paint stuck to the hair if any of you experience that. Just be sure follow washing the hair with some regular shampoo afterwards and condition it as well.... this mom is off to use some baby oil and dawn on my lil grease monkies

I am so happy that I found this board!!!! I had surgery last week on my scalp and the doctor used an antibiotic ointment with a petroleum base to keep my hair away from the incisions (10). I have looked like Medusa ever since. This morning I looked thru the cabinets and found some baby oil but no Dawn -- but did find another name brand of dish soap. I followed the recommended steps but did an extra wash with the dish soap (4 times instead of 3). It worked so well!!!!!!! Now I can leave my house without a hat pulled down to my ears.

My brother was left home alone with his two daughters (one is 2 years old and the other is 18 months), and as we all know, when the kids are left with dad, chaos occurs. Well his two girls found some vaseline and had a grand ole time covering the entire playroom and kitchen (hardwood floors, carpets, walls, windows, all the toys, and mostly themselves) with the vaseline. So, as loving aunt to my darling nieces I went searching for ways that my brother could get the jelly out of the girls' hair, and I found this on another website.

Luckily the news is good. Vaseline, which is composed of petroleum jelly (petrolatum) can be removed from hair. One of the most reliable removal methods involves cornstarch.

Apply a little cornstarch to the hair and carefully pat, (don't rub), it into the hair. The cornstarch will absorb some, if not all of the Vaseline. After you apply the cornstarch shampoo it out with a good clarifying shampoo like Philou Green Apple shampoo or a similar product. Most, if not all, of the Vaseline should be removed with the first treatment. If not, repeat until all the greasiness is gone. Be sure to use warm not hot water for the shampoo. Cold water makes the Vaseline worse.

If you are out of cornstarch you can try a baking soda/shampoo option. Mix one teaspoon of baking soda and mix it with a regular baby shampoo. Pat the mixture onto the hair while it is still dry. Then add warm to hot water. This should help. Repeat until all the Vaseline is removed.

Although flour will work as a cornstarch substitute, it is not usually as effective. Flour may also tend to dry the hair out more than the cornstarch.

Keep in mind that after applying cornstarch, flour or baking soda, you hair may need some extra TLC and a good deep conditioning treatment.

Thank you to everyone. I was in a panic after seeing my poor daughter's hair covered in Vaseline. After reading all of the suggestions, I decided to try a little of everything to get the Vaseline out of my daughter's hair. What worked was smearing it with peanut butter. Then pouring cornstarch over the peanut butter. After a few minutes, I then washed her hair with Palmolive. It worked like a charm.
