Have a 1998 peugeot 406 1.8 16v. And was wondering when the cam belt will need changing. It has 96k on it and i have had it 18 months and was intending to do it before it reaches 100k. I thought to be on the safe side because i don't know the interval for the engine. It has full service history but does not mention when the belt was done last but would of been changed at some point just don't know when! Any ideas?

Speaking as someone who has had 2 go on the same horrible french car, the advise is - if your unsure of when it was last changed, change it now.
Its far less costly than if it fails.

Peugeot he say: Replacement every 80,000 miles, or 54000 miles under adverse conditions (taxi, etc). Book time is 2.80 hours, plus 30mins if air con. I'd put a new tensioner on too, and also a water pump, if it was mine. Cheers John :)

On my 2 li petrol the dealer says its 82k and quoted about £300.

My friend did it on a 405 and took 1.5 hours but said if he did it again it would be half that time!
