The speed of sound is 340ms -1. What does the minus 1 signify?

(The -1 should be above the number like the inch sign eg 3" but I dont know how to do this on the computer).

A lighthouse sends out a beacon of light and a burst of sound at the same time. If the speed of sound is 340ms-1, how long after seeing the beacon will the captain of a ship 1.36km away hear the sound?
