Pilot Light

LOL  was expecting a certain amount of **** taking. :)

The Forum rules that forbid discussing gas related issues like this... if you want to discuss it we can in the Combustion Chamber.... Otherwise I ain't gonna be encouraging you do do this; sorry... I pay a lot of money to hold the certificates I hold...

If you want to know such things I politely (I mean that BTW) suggest you get the accreditation.

Like I said - you will waste several lifetimes worth of Pilot light gas costs trying to do what you want to do, and at the end of it you will have a more complicated boiler with increased chances of failure.

OK fair enough. Can't understand why you think my question jeopardises your certs though but appreciate your position.

Ok dormermike lets see 'roughly' how much that pilot light is costing per year. :D

0.25mm injector @ 22mb.

0.036 x 0.0625 x 0.95 x 5.87 = 0.013 m3/hour.

8,760 x 0.013 = 113 m3/year.

Pilot light usage would be around £30 a year , if your going through thermocouples by the dozen then expect around £60 a year.

Thanks - back of a fag packet calc by me put the cost closer to £90 per year when i used the meter reading which admittedly is a bit hit and miss (nothing else running at the time obviously) but £90 is fine too i guess. Is the injector def .25mm on that boiler out of interest?

Just for the record i am happy with the boiler as is and wont be touching it. I've had a couple of plumber/heating types suggest changing it but it simply isn't cost beneficial. I actually spend less on gas per year than my energy supplier quoted as typical for a smaller property.

One of the last decent boilers to come out of Ideal , the condenser boilers are ****e (all of em) compared to what you have.

Have a word with your RGI  and ask if the pilot flame could be turned down a tad. 8) , could save you around 30 notes a year. :D

TBH I wouldn't bother but on the other hand why give your hard earned cash to these theiving utility companies , just had a row with then this afternoon after trying to rip me off.

This!

I rang up for a quote for house insurance earlier. I work from home, so the house is occupied most of the time. Turns out it increases my buildings insurances because there is great risk of damage!! Wtf. Car insurance, i keep the car in a garage - well thats a higher risk than the street according to Aviva because folks keep scraping their cars putting them into garages.

Honestly the way this gov could get the economy going is going after the insurance companies.

Thanks for the replies, gave me a laugh anyway.

Dan has three monitors, one wife and one child and often tries to do too much all at the same time!

I was more referring to the time and effort I put into getting to where I am, with the certificates I have paid a lot for - which pales in comparison to some others on this site.

There is a limit to how much knowledge we are happy to impart FOC - especially when it is illegal to put some of that knowledge into practice.

Tony - I should have 4 monitors, but I can't get the 4th to work :(.

Makes the monthly book keeping all the more arduous. Hey ho... A little ALT Tabbing never hurt anyone I suppose.

Gas used on pilot isnt totally wasted the calcs people do is for it being on whole year by itself .
Dont forget a lot of the time the main burner will be on so pilot is contributing to heating appliance no matter how small a contribution.
Also in winter it puts a bit of heat into the heat exchanger heating the sitting water a bit.

So its not money completly wasted

Also when you've no room on on the washing line you can stick your sock on the flue and the pilot light will dry them

I've actually seen someone do this using main burner
