placing horizontal d.p.c.in brickwork

could someone please tell me how to use horizontal d.p.c. in brickwork,
do i place it on dry, put mortar on top then rest of bricks,or should i put it on top of thin layer of mortar, which is best,

All you need do is trap it with a mortar joint.

We have in the past smeared mortar up the masonry to help it stick and prevent it blowing off. Mainly we trap it at the top with a brick and let it trail down to the bottom.

It soon stops misbehaving once the first few courses have got it.

All the above info is based upon building one leaf of masonry up to lintel height before t'uther.
