placing rafters to the side of the studs

I am building a garden room which is 6.5m x 3m. The stud walls are built from 4x2's and the roof rafters will be 5x2's. Intuitively, I was thinking that I place the rafters at 400 centres an directly above each stud (I have a top plate in between). This means that I have to screw the rafters on at an angle.

Is it preferable and just as strong, if I place the rafter slightly offset from the vertical stud? I can then screw from underneath and through the top plate. This method of fixing feels easier and more robust.

Can you please advise. Many thanks

Can you not screw from above with the rafters and studs aligned? You just need some care that you don’t directly hit the other screw.

Or do what you propose. I don’t think there are any issues, apart from making the timber align with the boards.

(Do you have everything secure for this weekend’s storms?!)

That will need a screw going through the entire 5inch rafter. I thought that a 100mm screw from the bottom might be easier and stronger.

I don't follow this? They will still be 400 centred

LOL. Perfect timing! Sunday is looking dry and calm. I will be building all 4 walls and bracing them.

Right, yes. Sorry I’m not thinking.

Nothing wrong with screws at an angle. It might be easier than screwing from below?

Right, it’s just a matter of where they line up at the start and end.

Overthinking again, rafters on top of the studs or not it won't make any difference, screws diagonally or straight it won't make any difference, your rows of noggins will keep everything in check.
