Plaster/aqua board over old lathes

Hi Guys
i want to plaaterboard or aquaboard a wall in the bathroom next to the bath, having removed the old tiles some of the old plaster render has come away exposing some of the old black render and lathe. Can I baton the wall and screw the new plasterboard/auqa board onto those, if so can anyone suggest how i fix the batons? nails or screws?
