Hi all

Had a failed lathe and plaster ceiling in the bay which I’ve removed and planning on plastering boarding. Now the issue is the joists…there are none at the edges, can the board support itself or do I need to think of a way to add timber supports?

Thanks in advance, any advice appreciated

Needs more support really, ie noggins. Although looks like coving may have been there before? In which case may get away with it if coving again

Not coving this bit and hasn’t been there since we’ve moved in. There was a pvc trim there which I removed. Does it just need noggins in between the 2 joists or also against the wall?

Thanks

I’d just counter batten it ie batten over the joists at right angles to them. Obv would bring the ceiling down by an inch or so. If thats not an option you just need to get the ends nearest the wall/window supported rather than between the joists

And it needs insulation VCL etc.

I may have to do this providing I can get get curtains to fit

What size timber can I use for counter battening?

Thanks

Thanks all for the advice. Managed to get a few hours spare this evening and counter battened. I also framed it to allow support for the edges, hopefully it’s correct.

Looks good, but you missed an opportunity to get some much needed insulation in there. It looks like there's just a fascia board between the ceiling and outside world.

Consider taking it off and putting something in there? Ensuring there's also ventilation too.

You could just insulate over what you have and make a new lower ceiling, it would be vastly warmer then.

This is internal, there’s a room above. Render outside the bay. I put 50mm pir insulation in between the bay studs, as far as I get it it up. Will do the remainder then the room above is stripped
