Yet another possibly dumb question from me...

I'm (working up to) replacing a plaster & lath stud wall between bedroom and stairwell with plasterboard on one side where the plaster was blown. I decided, for better or worse, to take the plaster and laths off so I could put some insulation in and not lose any space, since the doorframe is already pretty close to the wall.

The room is about 245cm floor-to-ceiling. The thing is that the distance between the studs is 41cm except for one which is 42cm. What's the best way to board this? Do I have to go horizontally?

Also, is there any recommendation on what gap to leave at the bottom - if I can go vertically I will have 5cm with one board? In other rooms I've had to knock off the plaster at the base of the wall about this much to get the floorboard up, which go under the plaster.

Measure across and ensure you have uprights at 2400mm [centres] install more if needed then you can fit boards vertically, gap at bottom is not important just needs skirting to cover .

Thanks for the suggestion but...

Measure across and ensure you have uprights at 2400mm

I'm a bit confused - whitebook says 450mm/600mm between studs (height is 2400mm).

Adding additional studs is going to be a pain - wouldn't I have to take out existing noggings (or can I add uprights attaching to the noggings?). Could I also:

a) Add (vertical) battens to the existing studs?
b) Add extra noggings as needed and board horizontally?

Sorry typo should have been 1200mm not 2400, this allows edges of 1200 board to meet, does not matter too much if remaining timber are not equally spaced, you can fit horizontally if you wish but requires two people to hold in place, vertically you can do single handed, [well I can].
You can cut timber between noggings or remove noggings, whichever is easier.

Thanks, will do vertically - strangely enough I don't find too many friends enthusiastically volunteering to lend a hand ;)
