Plasterer? Advice needed plaster come off walls -HELP! pics*

Hi,
I have bought a house recently , its been built around 1955.
The house has had blown vynal wall paper on all walls , some rooms papered with up to 5 different wallpapers on all walls.
we stripped a few rooms and all the old plaster has fell off.
The pink plaster has come away in most places, and what hasnt come off is loose!
We got a plasterer round for an estimate.He said he could do the job.Now he says its going to cost more aschipping back to the brick with a machine as its the wrong mix of Lime????
Can anyone explain or help me with this problem.
The best i can explain is that when i pulled paper off not using a stripper most of the old plaster came of with it.There is a chalky type of wall underneath- maybe concrete.Im a bit baffled also it will cost a lot more per room.Here are a few images to explain better.

once you have removed all the loose plaster , and applied several sealing coats of diluted pva, a decent spread could bring these walls up to scratch, with regular skimming, in his sleep!!! p.s. next time you display pictures, put a ruler in the photograph to give some idea of scale

Some pieces are practically most of the walls some 6ft length ! (I took pictures of the area where there were no shadows).
So do you think there are no major probs and dont need chipping back to bare brick??
All that needs removing is the pink skim???

provided the float (backing) coat is sound, and doesn't make a hollow noise when tapped, then yes skimming will be ok.

Not in Sussex are you ? looks just like what`s happened to an estate of houses I know of Plus the ceilings are bad too.all around mid 50`s to 60`s

We have to consider the possibility that the plasterer is right, it is loose old rubbish and maybe it would be better to rip it all off and start again. Best to get second opinion and price, though, from someone who's actually looked at the job.

Causes a lot of disruption, though, and it's a dirty job. Maybe do it in summer when you can put all your stuff under a gazebo and live in the garden for a couple of days?

Whack up some emulsion... refix the skirtings... leave the windows open while it dries out... bish bosh, as the saying goes.

Good opportunity to do any electrical work, too - additional sockets, wall lights...
