Plastering over timber beams

Hello all,

What’s the best way for me to plaster over this timber beam? The ceilings are lath. The wall has a very thin coat of sand and cement followed by another thin layer of plaster. A 9.5mm plasterboard sticks out too much over the wall. There use to be coving covering this.
