Plastering

Thanks to you all for your knowledgable comments.

I know this sounds like an excuse, and it is, but my wife rules the roost here and she could not give a damn about the character of the place. I'd have kept the coving and the stained glass built in cupboard in one of the alcoves but NO it all had to go! She is allowing me to keep my treasured real fire but not with the 1950's fireplace.

The living room is 10m by 7m and I guess the heaviest things that hang on the walls are the radiators. I take your point about the hollowness of DL and I was not that pleased when I first saw it going up in our extension, but you can (have to in my case) learn to live with it.

I suppose the big question is the difference in price between DL and 'proper' plastering. Has anyone any ideas on this?

Tis always best to keep her indoors happy.

You can always say to her "I told you we should have had these walls plastered instead of DL" when she throws a plate at you and it stick's in the wall like a discus :)

Regarding price, it all depends on the spread. Most charge per day. The materials (bonding against the cost of 12.5mm boards and adhesive) would probably work out the same but labour costs would almost definitely be higher

PS,

Please tell me you didnt skip the stained glass ?

No offense is implied to your beloved but your comments remind me of an episode of "Escape to the Country". The said family were being shown round a grade 2 listed Geogian house. They said they'd rip out the original fireplace and put a bar in its place. The original oak staircase would be replaced with a 'lovely' steel and glass one. The manicured lawn replaced with Astro-turf!

Thankfully, they didn't buy it.

carryon,

I saw that. It looked as if the guy had 2 wifes? why did the 60 year old woman who was dressed like she was ready for a night out in Ibiza have a say in it all ?

I only caught the last bit of the show but if i dint know better, i would say that was a wind up. Surely the shows presenters are briefed about what the couple are looking for, so why show them properties like that?

Can't say that I ever saw this but it does sound funny.

The stained glass cupboard doors are in the garage but they will not make it back into the house.

Just to put your mind at rest, we have an oak staircase but that is not being replaced, the fireplace will be replaced and no matter what anybody thinks about the 1950's version that is there now it will be an improvement.

Just to add to my woes I think that the bay is collapsing, but I am going a bit off thread there!

I will be asking my plasterer about the cost of plasterering properley and will take it from there.

:(

bobbler,

Not trying to get at you, it just sounds that you would have been better moving into a more modern house if your ripping out most of the original features.

I agree with regards the 50's fireplace. if it were a Victorian cast iron one then that would be a different matter :)

If you can and are living with DL then stick with it mate. most new builds use the stuff now so why shouldn't you? its just my and many other peoples preferences. When you stick plaster to a wall for a living you get to know which is best.

Keep the missus happy mate then you will have a nice easy life...
