is it ok to use metel compression fittings on plastic pipe with inserts?
also the blue pipe
also i know you shouldnt use joint compound
 
As an amateur I have never had much success with these (speedfit pipe - not tight enough and they leak, too tight and they leak) so I use a plastic straight connector to a short piece of copper and put the compression fitting on that. Gives me some peace of mind.

Yes. Don't leave out the insert.

Correct, but you can use PTFE tape.
