For most DIY projects it seems sensible to have one thread per problem, to keep everything contextual and targeted to exactly the problem the OP is having.

This is largely how the forum operates now, and indeed when we see someone floating an ancient thread to ask about something they think is the same, responders feel it's better to start a separate thread on it anyway

I suspect thus that the mechanism that tries to find a suitable existing thread to post into when someone starts a new thread, is doing more harm than good because it causes years old threads to resurface, which then causes irrelevant noise due to people (probably clicking "New posts" to find active discussions) quoting and responding to very old messages

New Forum Help - "Similar Threads"

DIYnot .... I realise that one now gets a bright red warning if one attempts to reply to an old thread, which should do a lot to prevent the accidental resurrection of ancient threads. However, I thought the idea was also to limit the age of old threads which appear in the "Similiar Threads"...

Resurrecting long dead threads

Tried to email admin unsuccessfully on this topic but why doesn't admin 'Lock' all threads over a year old then they cannot be revived. If a point is worth reviving then a new thread should be started It might be useful to have an archive of the older good threads and delete the cr*p thus...
