Hi there
First time poster.
I wonder if someone can shed some light on what I can do to fix this problem please?
I had a chimney breast re-plastered in the lounge. It all seemed fine. I waited about 4 weeks before decorating, it was perfectly dry so I applied the paint (Deluxe trade Diamond Eggshell). Looked great.
About a month later small hairline cracks appeared all over the surface.
First plasterer was not available (out of biz I think...) so I called in a second plasterer. Very helpful guy. Said the plaster was solid and hadn't blown at all. So just needed to scrape out all the cracks and fill. Which he did with Gyproc Easifill 60. All seemed to be fine. I waited 48 hours, sanded the filling down, got a really nice smooth surface and re-painted (same paint as before)

After a couple of hours as the paint was drying, all the places that had been filled where had previously been cracks, now had thin raised lines. It looks like the wall has varicose veins!

I have rubbed them done numerous times (4 times now) and re-painted, and every time the same thing. Varicose veins.

Please can someone advise what the heck is going on and how I can get past this. We are desperate to get this room finished and put our house back together! :)

Thank you
Mark

Spider web cracks in the original plaster?
They have come back I guess.
I use 100m X 1m rolls of plastering mesh in walls like that to prevent the cracks coming back. I place mesh in first layer of plaster.

As for filler. You have some moisture in the wall thats being absorbed by the easyfill causing it to swell. Gypsum plaster won't absorb moisture like easyfill so that could explain why.
Also is the property old. Was it lime plaster?
Gypsum trapes moisture in old lime plaster walls.
Other problem is the eggshell. Because of the sheen it highlights defects. Also won't let any moisture out the walls.

I don't know what the exact problem is but some things to consider

Well I tried to cal them but they are no more... Gone bump I think, not a good sign eh?

Not that old, 60s, def not lime plaster.

Maybe moisture in the wall, but seems unlikely. The house has not been left empty, heating on etc. And it's a chimney breast, so no outside face. But possible I guess.

Main thing I am hoping for a suggestion on how to move forward. Sounds like you would re-plaster with mesh underneath. I was hoping to avoid yet another plastering round! :). But if that is what it takes....

Current plasterer is saying PVA the cracks (after sanding out the swelling) but I have read lots of horror stories about using PVA under paint

@Wayners Thanks for the ideas....

At a bit of a loss....

Wallrock fiberliner will solve it.
There is no dpm under chimney because it would melt with heat so it needs ventilation.
Any warm moist air goes up and hits the cold air causing condensation damp so you need a good flow of air or cap off top with a vent at bottom. Just mentioning because it can be a problem..

Thanks for that, just been watching a few videos on how to hang this stuff (yes you guessed it, I am Not a decorator! :) ). Seems like it will solve the problem. Trimming around the chimney breast and fireplace is going to be a challenge!. Seems like this is going to be the sure way to solve the problem though. Thank you @Wayners
