Plug top wiring.

well i have done PAT course recently; all be it a refresher course, and the course instructor demo'd the visual aspect of the test and it involved checking the entire length of cable on the appliance, undoing the plug top and checking for polarity, correct cable length, condition of cable grip and no exposed conductor etc. We were told only to not check the inside of the plug top when its impossible to do so i.e a moulded plug.

I Guarantee you will find more faults visually than testing. That's why it is by far the most important part of the process.

There seems to be a bit of a discrepancy between:

Remember PAT will not pick up badly abraded/cut insulation, exposed live parts, and so on.

and

The visual check !
Indeed.
I think a lot of people haven't realised that the visual inspection is the "I" in "Inspection and Test" regime. Testing is the "T".

And of course, there are a large number of devices (many double insulated devices for example) for which there is no applicable Test - only an Inspection.

Duh! You'd look pretty stupid pushing just a 'plug' into a 'plug socket' now wouldn't you. Of course it's a 'plug top'.
