I need to fix a small metal box weighing about 1kg to an MDF cupboard which are the best sort of pugs to use?

you don't need plugs for fixing into mdf, Just use normal screws. Although it's a treibbly weak material to fix to so you might need to put an extra piece of plywood or any old bit of wood on the inside of where you are fixing to increase the depth that the screw is into if that makes sense.
