Is there an easy wasy of removing old pointing or is it grinder time, My house needs a re-point and I'm gonna give it a go meself.

If it needs grinding out. It doesn't need re-pointing in my opinion. :)
That's not a bad rule to follow.
I have worked on many jobs in the past where a surveyor has called for a repoint when not needed and after all the joints were ground out by the labourers and re pointed by one of the lesser trowels the wall looked a mess.
If you have an old house with solid walls and lime mortar and there is a damp problem than a re point is probably the answer. A hammer and plugging chisel, or even the old fashioned mortar rake will produce a neat finish.
There are some times when grinding is needed, but you have to be carefull not to damage the brickwork

Hammer and chisel is what I was thinking , I did'nt know wether this would be deep enough as sometimes only the top bit of pointing comes out and you have to bash the rest to get a deep enough recess.
