polarity test on upstairs lighting with no cpc

any suggestions on how to test for polarity on an installation ie old house 60`s where no upstairs cpc to the lighting how would you determine if the switches are in the phase or neutral conductors?

I'm sure there is an easier way, but brain is on slow mode today. Isolate breaker, remove phase from breaker and connect wander lead. Connect other end of low reading ohmeter to phase at light fitting, then get someone to test switch on and off to see if you make and brake continuity.
