i am trying to fill some holes in my wall, but the polyfilla when dry is very cumbly, in that i can scrape it off with my nails and it turns right back to powder. what am i doing wrong?? not enough water?

try fastset, you can get it from b+q it comes in a small bag in powder form.
put a couple of inches of water in a bucket and mix to a smooth cream, dampen down any holes to be filled preferably with some pva glue, apply fastset let dry and rub down with some sand paper.
