pond filter cleaning

You should clean the sponge layers as and when required, use pond water not tap water to do this, since the chlorine content of tap water will kill the bacteria.

Does that mean I should clean the sponges in the pond ('')
Question I'm confused.

Fill a bucket with pond water and place the sponge in this give it a few good squeezes to dislodge dirt, repeat again with another bucket of pond water until no more dirt comes out of sponge.

Just a note on chlorine in tap water, when topping up the pond at the very least use a fine spray on your hose to gas off the chlorine or do as I have and buy a water purifier to filter all tap water entering the pond, depends how serious you are and if you have got £200+ to spare!
