Pooly fitted worktop, how big a gap will tiling hide?

Darrude, you have learnt the hard way, finding people on websites is not a good idea, they pay to go on there.

Out of interest, did you get 3 quotes for the work? and what made you choose him/was he the cheapest?

This may sound sexist, but its always best if the man is in the house as the tradesmen will not normally take advantage.

Next time find tradesmen from family or friends.

Well, I almost don't want to answer to save me the embarrassment from my own stupidity...!

The long story is, we had a family friend lined up to do the work, but he got a big job in London (we live in Yorkshire) and so he had to cancel at the last minute. I asked quite a lot of people (family and friends) and didn't get any recommendations so we got three firms to quote from the local advertiser (need and arch door making and a repair the front door frame).

By this time the worktops and kitchen units had arrived and were blocking our entrance hall.

He was the second joiner to arrive, and I'll be honest, I didn't warm to him at all, but when he said he was available on the following wednesday, which with having a 1 year old (the reason I am able to write this post at 5am.......) who kept pulling on the worktops which at this time were on there side in the hall and being worried about them possibly falling on him, timing was my primary concern. So by the time that I had agreed to using him I had only had his quote (he was only slightly more than I was quoted by the family friend).

Live and learn I guess, but now it's time to go and price up up stands.

you say he fitted the worktops?
did he fit the units aswell?

I fitted 2 new floor cupboards and an integrated dishwasher. The new worktops were needed to due to the size increase (kitchen only ran along 1 and a half walls, now runs along 2 and half walls (added room for the washer and dryer and well). The height and fit of the units was absolutely perfect though (I'm an apprentice trained injection mould toolmaker, and now work as an design engineer, so have a good understanding of tolerances and just how much work is required to get the detail right).

Ironically the issues are where the existing units. When i showed the guy the gap one edge he tried pushing it flat against the wall, I said don't do that, the gap on the other side is bigger.... The fit is a joke, my dad has seen it now and can't believe it, he said he's can't believe any tradesman would do a job so badly and not apologies / offer to put it right.

I've got some good news for you Darren, by the time your little chap is 14 months he should be sleeping through the night.

We have a baby boy who is now 18 months, has a bath at 5.30 and in bed by 6.00 and sleeps till 6.00 the following morning.

Thank God for a full night sleep.
