Hi, first off, I know nothing about boilers... :?

I bought my house about 6 months ago. Its has a Potterton "Housewarmer" (the irony of this name will become clear...) back boiler. Don't know the model name - don't really know where to look for that.

I hate this boiler. The fire at the front is ugly, the timer doesn't work, it heats the radiators even if you tell it you want it to heat water only...

But the main problem is that the little light on the side keeps getting stuck on red. Normally it will come on fine once and then when it tries to relight the light gets stuck at red and i have to turn the wall switch off and wait about 3 hours before turning it back on and then I can get the red light off.

However, the light has been red since yesterday and it won't go off at all. When I turn the heating switch off the boiler makes a click noise and the light goes off but when i turn the switch on the wall back on it goes red again. There is a switch on the fire which looks like an on off button - when I switch that sometimes the light quickly turns green then goes off, but when I turn it back on the light is red again.

I know i need a new boiler...probably a new heating system...however, i'm very skint! I don't have the heating insured (because i'm skint!) and I don't know when the boiler was last serviced...if ever - I was told the heating was reliable when i bought this bloody house and like a mug i believed that!

I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas regarding a quick fix to get this working while I save my pennies - i'm having to shower at the swimming baths at the min! Also, does anyone know how much it should cost to get the boiler replaced for a combi boiler? Its a 2 bed semi - most of the radiators look pretty new and have in built heating knob thingys. Also, as a quick fix, does anyone know if a shower would need to draw hot water from the hot tank or does it heat its own? If so, how much would it cost to get a shower fitted? And finally, does anyone know a corgi man (or woman) in the tyne and wear area who is reliable, cheap and will turn up to fix this damn thing!?

Long question I know...I would be very pleased with any help!

Would imagine you have got pasing y plan valve and a knackered pcb on the boiler from your description. Really need someone on site to check other possible components though.
