potterton kingfisher MF rs60

Hi, We have a potterton kingfisher mf rs60 about 8yrs old in a property that we are renting out. The pilot light kept going out and an engineer fitted a new thermocouple. Now it apparrently leaks fumes and another engineer has condemmed it, saying we need a new boiler! Is he over-reacting, is a repair really out of the question?
As there was no sign of fumes prior, how it possible that the first engineer in fitting the thermocouple has caused this leak in some way?

Some advice would be much appreciated!
