The mains stopcock was turned off while the boiler was still on. Now it won't start. There is a hum, a click and then the igniter sparks but there is no ignition.

Is there something obvious I'm missing?
Should I looking for something in the system or is it boiler fault, such as a coincidentally blocked pilot?

The cry, "it was working fine before this" can be heard in the background...

yes its an old boiler that is hugely inefficient and should be changed...!

Thanks, Alec, I do intend to replace it as soon as I can manage to.

Is there anything you can suggest that will help today? Even if it is just pinpointing where I should be looking?

Assuming your gas is turned on then you need a boiler engineer. Its not a DIY job.

It seems to be totally coincidental that the boiler has faulted at the same time as the water was turned off.
