sounds normal except no clicking noise so no pilot, no clicking noise so its not trying to spark up! but then for no reason it fires up as normal as though nothing has happend.

somedays it wont work other days it works fine, any ideas

We are are not allowed to give DIY repair advice on gas/.combustion topics here.

The obvious advice is to call a competent boiler engineer!

Tony

but i joined this forum AFTER reading all the advice about potterton boilers on this forum, or has something changed.

research leads me to believe its possibly

1) relay, but this seems to be making normal clicking noise
2) spark generator, my only experience is ignition coils on cars, and they either work or stop completely, not intermittently
3) PCB?

I have no intention of opening it up and playing with gas side but these are all easily accessible

If you really had no intention of opening it yourself then you would not be asking here or doing all these searches!

Do the right thing and call a pro!

Tony

If you read the post tony it say the electrics are easily accessible without opening up gas side, do you have any thing positive to say?

The gas fitter says " there is no point trying to fix it as it's an old boiler and parts aren't available, best to just buy a new one"

But the parts do seem to be readily available

I don't have much to add except to confirm that the forum rules did indeed change a few years back. So you may find old gas topics when searching, but will get no new gas advice. If you are having to ask all these questions it is clear you do not fully know how a gas boiler works, and should not be fiddling around inside, as you may compromise safety devices. Sorry but that's the rules.

Yes you have a very old boiler and most parts not officially available but still a lot of engineers out there that are happy to repair these and most either have a stock of spares or know where to get them, try calling a few local guys and tell them the make and model and ask if they have experience of them or they will undoubtedly try and sell you a new boiler,

Good luck

Best to call a gas safe engineer to repair it as the boiler is a positive pressure boiler and required safety check by gas safe engineer ( very important ) and he / she will need to service it, especially the casing seal.

Your boiler is very old, came out 1982 I think and time to replace it. The spare parts is very limited and a lot of money to buy.

Daniel.
